Summer Camping has always been one of our favourites. One year our parents brought us some paints, but when painting pictures was getting boring, we started painting rocks. We painted all different types all day long and it was a blast! Then we got the brilliant idea to start selling them, everyone at the campground loved our rocks and they just kept coming back. Soon enough though summer was over and we packed up our brushes until next year! And that couldn't come any faster. But in the spring of 2011, we were reading a magazine when we came across an article about girls just like us changing the world! It showed just how easy it is to make a difference. That got us thinking and we realized we could sell our rocks and raise money for charity instead! Now we just had to decide what charity's to help. Well Kylee was born with Transposition of the Great Arteries and was flown to BC Children's Hospital where they did open heart surgery on her when she was only six days old and brought her back to good health! We wanted to give back to them for saving her life and help them out so they can save even more kids, so BC Children's Hospital became one of the charities! Also, sadly our dog Sasha died earlier that year and we got her from the SPCA, so we wanted to help other dogs just like her and keep them healthy and happy so we also choose the SPCA as one of the charities. We found a cat that lived outside, she was blind, and we always feed her, when we moved away she went to critteraid and got her eyes fixed, then she lived a long happy life there, so in memory of her we also decided to raise money for critteraid a place in summerland that helps cats. Later on we learnt about Free the Children and how they help children across the world that are living in poverty! We knew that we had to help them too, so now we are raising money for a water well in Kenya so girls don't have to walk miles everyday to collect water and can go to school instead! We have also raised money for the local food bank. Now that we had our Charities we put our idea to action, how it would work is first you choose your rock, next how much money you would like to donate, and then what charity you would like to donate to! We set up a table when we were camping and now that the money was going to charity we were an even bigger hit! We didn't want to only sell at campsites though so we started selling in front of our driveway, and everybody who was on a walk got to pick a rock up along the way! After a while we started selling at craft fairs, markets and special events and came to be "Charity Rocks" We have raised almost $9500.00 painting and selling rocks, and learnt just how easy and fun it really is to make a difference!
